Grow your own salads and vegetables in a 6ft. by 6ft. raised bed filled with
12ins. of magic soil made from worm-composted farm manure

These gardens are modular and can be sited anywhere that has at least a
half-day of full sunlight

Objective
• To enable families to grow their own healthy salads and vegetables all
summer long.
• A start toward independence from an uncertain food supply.

Advantages

• Great nutrition for pennies a day.
• Low-maintenance instant garden.
• Deep soil means deeper roots, better drainage and retains moisture.
• The soil is like chocolate cake - easy to work and requires no
   backbreaking digging.
• Deep nutrient rich soil means more food for less space and work.

The Magic Soil

Soil has been described as the poor man’s rain forest. It is unequaled for
its diversity and abundance of animal life. In the Amazon rain forest 95% of
the nutrients are stored in the plants compare to the temperate zone where
the nutrients are in the soil. Biologists say it takes hundreds of years to
make an inch or two of topsoil - Red Wriggler composting worms can do it in
months. These worms compost horse manure into the thoroughbred of soils. It
is so packed with nutrients that by midsummer you may be gardening with a
machete instead of a trowel.

Tips
• Before planting cover the garden with a sheet of clear polythene. This
will encourage unwanted seeds to germinate, the heat will then kill them.
• Weeds can be prevented by mulching around the plants.
• Attach a trellis on the north side for climbing plants, such as, tomatoes.
• Make an automatic watering system. Collect rain water from the roof in a
barrel. Gravity feed water by hose pipe to the garden. Small holes in the
pipe allow water to trickle out.
• Hoops of plastic can support mesh or polythene to modify temperature
extremes.
